24/7/7 network and server monitoring, before users report a problem

Continuous monitoring lets the technical team see a problem before work stops. What should be monitored, and how should we manage alerts?

In many organizations, the first person to learn that a service is down is the user. By the time the technical team starts investigating, work has stopped and time has been lost. Continuous monitoring reverses this order: the alert reaches an engineer before the problem reaches the user.

What Should Be Monitored?

  • Availability: Does the server, switch, firewall or service respond at all?
  • Performance: CPU, memory, disk space and link bandwidth usage over time.
  • Hardware health: Equipment temperature, disk status, and power supply.
  • Services: Databases, email, web-based systems, and VoIP telephony, not just the server itself.
  • Security: Failed login attempts, unusual configuration changes and firewall events.

Thresholds and Alerts

Monitoring that sends a trivial alert every few minutes is quickly ignored. Thresholds should be set based on each system's normal behavior, and alerts should be tiered: informational, warning and critical. Every critical alert should also have a defined owner and a clear handling procedure.

Dashboards and Periodic Reports

The data collected by monitoring is not only for moments of crisis. Resource usage trends show which server will soon reach full capacity, which link needs an upgrade, and which device produces the most errors. A monthly report of this data is a solid basis for budget decisions.

24/7 Monitoring Without a 24/7 Team

For many businesses, keeping a technical team on duty around the clock is not cost-effective. In this case, outsourcing monitoring to a network operations center (NOC) is a logical solution: tools and experts are always ready, and the organization pays only for the service.

Modern Shabakeh Partak provides 24/7 monitoring of networks, servers, and critical services, along with periodic analytical reports.
