Server Virtualization with VMware: Benefits and Implementation Tips

Several low-utilization physical servers can be consolidated onto a single virtual infrastructure. But successful virtualization requires proper design of storage, networking, and backup.

In many organizations' server rooms, there is still a separate physical server for each service: one for accounting, one for office automation, one for files. Most of these servers run at less than one-fifth of their capacity most of the time, yet they consume power, take up space, and each requires separate maintenance.

What does virtualization do?

With virtualization, a single powerful physical server runs multiple independent virtual machines. Each virtual machine has its own operating system and applications, while hardware resources are shared among them all. VMware vSphere is one of the most widely used platforms for this in organizations.

Key Benefits

Better use of hardware and fewer physical servers.

Reduced power consumption, cooling and rack space.

Provision a new server in minutes instead of days.

High availability: if one host fails, virtual machines restart on another host.

Simpler backup and recovery of the entire machine, not just files.

Design Tips

  • Storage: Virtual machine performance depends on disk speed more than anything else. The choice between shared storage (SAN or NAS) and software-defined solutions such as vSAN should be based on capacity and workload type.
  • Network: Management traffic, VM migration, storage, and user traffic should be separated, and links should be redundant.
  • Capacity: Always reserve spare capacity for the failure of one host (N+1).
  • Licenses: Choose the software edition and license based on the features you need so you don't overpay.

Phased Migration

Moving physical servers to a virtual environment can be done step by step with minimal downtime. Less critical services are migrated first so the team becomes familiar with the new environment, followed by mission-critical systems.
